Topic: Blepharoplasty of Upper Eyelids
Abstract:
Blepharoplasty has potential complications. Ophthalmologists pay particular attention to the request for
cosmetics and protection of the eyes. Eyelid ptosis is the prime concern of upper eyelid cosmetic surgery.
Surgical correction of ptosis depends much on the function of levator muscles. Extensive elevation in
poor functioning levator muscles leads to lagophthalmos and cornea erosion complications. The worst
result can be corneal ulcers and blindness. Cosmetic surgery of eyelids always has to do a preoperative
investigation of medical conditions. Patients with thyroid disorders, hypertension, hyperglycemia,
hyperlipidemia, heart disease, and coagulopathy are not good candidates for these cosmetic surgeries.
Brow ptosis and facial paresis have to be distinguished from eyelid surgery. Browpexy instead of eyelid
surgery is the better choice. Finally, cosmetic surgeons should never touch patients with unrealistic
expectations.
